Men's Soccer Loses 2-1 Overtime Heartbreaker at Neumann

(box score)

In a meeting between teams that just cannot settle things in regulation, Widener surrendered a one-goal cushion in the second half and was dealt a 2-1 overtime loss at Neumann in Aston, PA.

Widener (2-4) took a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute when Derek Brubaker (Lancaster, PA) scored off an assist from fellow sophomore Matt Montera (New City, NY) for his fifth career goal.

Neumann (3-2) answered in the 67th minute when Joe Larkins netted an unassisted tally for a 1-1 draw.

So it was only fitting that these teams would go to overtime a fifth straight year.  The Pride had a three-game unbeaten streak versus the Knights that included a win in 2008 and draws the last two years, including last season's at PPL Park.

Neumann ended Widener's run 3:47 into overtime when Michael Attalian found the back of the net off a pass from Nathan Beideman.

Senior Gareth Cooper (Royersford, PA) took four shots and sophomore Dan Price (Norristown, PA) made six saves for the Pride.

Attalian had five shots and Bob Mastrillo amassed four saves for the Knights.

Widener begins a seven-game homestand Wednesday against Washington (MD), beginning at 7:00 pm.
