Cormier’s Overtime Goal Helps Field Hockey Rally for Dramatic 3-2 Victory at Swarthmore

(boxscore)

Senior Colleen Cormier (Westampton, NJ) scored 4:27 into overtime as Widener rallied from down two goals for an enthralling 3-2 victory at Swarthmore.

The comback began in the 26th minute when sophomore Hannah Robinson (Ocean City, NJ) netted her first career goal, closing the deficit to 2-1.

Widener hung around the rest of the way before getting the equalizer with no time remaining in regulation as a penalty corner was called.  Junior Nicole Nardone (Garwood, NJ) got the ball and the top and fired one to senior Kate Fay (West Chester, PA), who put one inside the right corner for a 2-2 tie.

The Pride had all the momentum and carried that into overtime.  Fay took a shot that hit the post and Cormier was right there to put home the rebound and keep Widener undefeated (3-0).

Cormier and Nardone fired three shots apiece and freshman Jessica Sochocky (Hammonton, NJ) made nine saves for the Pride.

Sophia Agathis took five shots and Gabriella Capone totaled seven saves for the Garnet (1-2).

Beth Johnson scored in the 16th minute to give the Garnet a 1-0 lead.  Maegan Hearney doubled Swarthmore's cushion three minutes later thanks to assists from Johnson and Eileen McHugh.

Widener on Thursday hosts Eastern at 7:00 pm at Edith R. Dixon Field.
