Women's Lacrosse Falls, 18-8, to Swarthmore

Widener could not overcome a first-half scoring barrage by Swarthmore and suffered an 18-8 loss at Edith R. Dixon Field.
 
The Garnet (3-1) opened a 12-4 halftime lead thanks to four goals from Annelise Mowry and three from Nicole Vanchieri. Swarthmore posted a 17-9 shots edge in the half.
 
Mowry, Vanchieri and Marie Mutryn all scored four goals.  Annalise Penikis had a day with three goals, four assists, six ground balls and four caused turnovers for the Garnet, who closed with a 30-17 shots advantage.
 
Sophomore Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA) scored three goals with senior Calina Walz (Medford, NJ) and junior Emily Shumaker (Belcamp, MD) each scoring twice for the Pride (2-3). Senior Mellany Broomall (Clarksboro, NJ) was all over the place with a team-season-high eight draw controls to go with a goal.
 
Swarthmore pulled into a 7-7 tie in the “320 Challenge,” the annual series pitting the schools in their 19 shared sports. For the remainder of the school year, the first school to score three more points wins the 2010-11 crown.
 
Widener on Saturday hosts King's, beginning at 1:00 pm.
