Baseball Makes it Five Alive With Doubleheader Sweep of No. 23 St. John Fisher

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Junior Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) set the tone in game one with a grand slam and Widener got two complete-game outings on the mound to run its winning streak to five, courtesy of two 9-1 victories over 23rd-ranked St. John Fisher in Winter Haven, FL.

Sieracki stepped into the box in the first inning with the bases loaded, no one out and the Pride down 1-0. He then changed the course of the day's actions by clearing the sacks with his second long ball in as many games. This was part of a seven-run inning as senior Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) added a two-run single later in the frame.

It was enough for Brookhaven, PA senior Kevin Culbert (1-0), who went all the way by allowing just one run and four hits over seven innings.

DeAngelis had three hits with Sieracki, junior Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA) and sophomore Matt Hone (Newtown, PA) each adding two.

Norristown, PA junior Salvatore Spera (1-0) was the only pitcher Widener (5-1) needed in game two, striking out five and yielding an unearned run and three hits over seven innings.

Senior Alex Oliver (Lebanon, NJ) had three hits, Saverio recorded two and a double with DeAngelis and Sieracki getting two hits apiece. Sophomore Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL) had a double and three RBI with senior Jason Brooke (Collegeville, PA) getting two RBI.

This marks the second time in four years Widener has fared well in Florida against a ranked school. The squad in 2008 scored a doubleheader split against No. 18 Augustana (IL) to open the campaign.

Widener on Wednesday battles Augustana (IL) at 11:00 am.
