Field Hockey Falls Just Short in 2-1 Loss at Alvernia

(box score)

Junior Nicole Nardone (Garwood, NJ) scored on a penalty stroke late in the first half for Widener, which could not hold the lead in a tough 2-1 Commonwealth Conference loss at Alvernia in Reading, PA.

Nardone's goal in the 27th minute was her seventh of the season and gave the Pride a 1-0 lead.  It was her second penalty stroke marker in regulation this year.

Needing to win by at least two goals to make the conference tournament, Widener (7-8, 2-4 CC) kept the pressure on with eight shots in the second half.  But Sam Landis squared the match at 1-1 for Alvernia in the 41st minute.

The Crusaders (11-6, 4-2) took a 2-1 lead with 4:12 left when Lauren Guido netted her sixth goal of the year, but were put on the defensive when a penalty gave the Pride a stroke with 38 seconds left.  Nardone was called upon for the equalizer, but goalkeeper Erin Wunsch made the save to preserve the win.

Nardone took four shots and freshman Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) had a season-high 12 saves for Widener.

Wunsch finished with six saves for the Crusaders, who closed with a 21-12 shots edge.

Widener ends its season Thursday at home against Goucher, starting at 7:00 pm.
