Widener struggled early and could never recover against an opportunistic squad in No. 15 Swarthmore and was dealt a 4-1 defeat at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
Swarthmore opened the scoring just 7:51 into the game when Roberto Contreras IV pounced on a turnover inside the box and put it away for a 1-0 lead. The Garnet (3-0) scored exactly seven minutes later for a 2-0 advantage as Contreras fired home a free kick from 20 yards.
Widener had a golden opportunity to get back into the game in the 19th minute when sophomore Drew Hilinski (Perkasie, PA) was given a penalty kick, but Swarthmore goalkeeper David D'Annunzio made a diving save to his right to keep it a 2-0 game.
Morgan Langley tallied in the 22nd minute after receiving a ball up the middle of the field from Pierre Dyer, and touching it past Widener freshman goalkeeper Jakub Valdner (Bratislava, Slovakia). Swarthmore made it 4-0 in the 64th minute after Ayman Abunimer fed Micah Rose who scored on a shot from 30 yards out that deflected off of Valdner's hands as he made a diving attempt for the save.
The Pride got on the board in the 77th minute. Dan Koch (Perkasie, PA) fed a ball up the sideline to fellow freshman Derek Brubaker (Lancaster, PA), who served it into the box to junior Dan Lorenzet (Forest Hill, MD) for a header which found its way to the back of the net.
Valdner made six saves for the Pride (3-1).
Widener on Friday travels to Oneonta, NY to face No. 8 Whitworth in the Mayor's Cup at 4:00 pm.
