Women's Soccer Drops 2-1 Contest to Franklin & Marshall in Home Opener

(box score)

Widener cut its deficit in half with just over twenty minutes left in regulation, but could not put another one in in a 2-1 loss to Franklin & Marshall at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Franklin & Marshall took the lead exactly 19 minutes in when Carley Nicholson assisted Stephanie Bartner. Bartner assisted Selena Boro for a 2-0 lead just over nine minutes into the second half.

Sophomore Alyssa Scala (Sayville, NY) brought Widener to within one in the 70th minute.  She received a through ball just inside the box from freshman Kelly Buckley (Villanova, PA) and deposited it in the back of the net.

The Pride (1-1) frantically fought in the final minutes to score the tying goal, leading to a 12-6 shot advantage in the second half, but could not manage to knot the score. Scala had Widener's best opportunity in the 78th minute with a shot that required a diving save from Franklin & Marshall goalkeeper Katie Golding.

Junior Brittany Balentine (Medford, NJ) took six shots for Widener, and sophomore Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) made four saves.

Golding recorded the win, making four saves for the Diplomats (1-0).

Widener on Tuesday travels to Swarthmore for a 7:00 pm start.
