#23 Women's Soccer Rolls to Seventh Straight Victory, 1-0 at FDU-Florham

(box score)

Freshman Victoria Batter (Woodlyn, PA) scored in the 75th minute, lifting No. 23 Widener to its seventh consecutive win with a 1-0 triumph over FDU-Florham in Madison, NJ.

Widener earned an 11-4 shots advantage in the first half, but could not manage to break through. After over 74 scoreless minutes, junior Brittany Balentine (Medford, NJ) fed a ball across the box and Batter buried it for her fourth goal of the year.

Freshman Kelly Buckley (Villanova, PA), senior Caryinna Yenchak (Ashley, PA) and Balentine each took three shots for the Pride (8-1).

Freshman Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ) earned her first collegiate victory and sophomore Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) recorded seven saves. The two also combined for the squad's seventh shutout of the year, and fourth straight clean sheet.

The win gives Widener its longest winning streak since the school record of eight set in 1995.  It also sets the mark for the best nine-game start in school history.

Brittany Kanickij recorded three shots for the Devils (5-4-1) and Melanie Pierson made seven saves.

Widener on Friday opens Commonwealth Conference play when it hosts Albright as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. The women's game is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start, with the men's game to follow at approximately 7:00 pm.
