Widener generated many quality scoring opportunities, but was only able to manage one goal and was dealt a 2-1 loss by Washington (MD) in Chestertown, MD.
Washington took a 1-0 lead just under seven minutes into the game when Sam Wild scored off a corner kick from Gavin Rayburn. Widener took the next six shots, and nine of the final 11 in the half en route to a 10-3 advantage, but could not find the back of the net.
Wild scored an unassisted goal in the 50th minute to make it 2-0 Washington. After two more Washington shots in just over the next three minutes, Widener again took control of the game, but to no avail. The Pride (4-4-1) recorded the final 13 shots, but could only find the back of the net once on a header by freshman Derek Brubaker (Lancaster, PA) in the 81st minute following a failed clear.
Junior Gareth Cooper (Royersford, PA) had Widener's best chance to knot the score when he fired a shot that was played off the line by Washington defender Tim Marcin with just over three minutes left.
Brubaker registered eight shots for Widener, who finished with a 24-6 edge.
Chris Phipps made 13 saves for the Shoremen (3-4).
Widener is off until next Wednesday when it travels to Radnor, PA to face Cabrini at 4:00 pm.
