Junior Colleen Cormier (Westampton, NJ) scored twice, leading Widener to a 3-1 win over DeSales at Edith R. Dixon Field.
Cormier opened the scoring exactly 20 minutes into the game after taking possession of a loose ball inside the circle and firing it home. She scored again just under five minutes into the second half to make it 2-0 after redirecting a shot from senior Megan Scarpinato (Sewell, NJ) past goalkeeper Victoria DelToro.
Freshman Samantha Balonis (Northumberland, PA) assisted sophomore Brittany Creighton (Pitman, NJ) less than a minute later for an insurance goal and a 3-0 Widener advantage. The pair has now connected for four goals in Widener's last three contests.
Amy Pulcini, who registered five shots for DeSales, scored an unassisted goal in the 68th minute to break up the shutout.
Widener exhibited a strong defense, holding the Bulldogs (4-3) to zero shots in the game's first 22 minutes. The offense took control early in the second half, leading to an 11-6 shot advantage and an 8-4 edge in penalty corners in the stanza.
Scarpinato recorded six shots for the Pride (3-1), and Cormier added five.
Senior Megan Purcell (Perkasie, PA) earned the victory, making seven saves. She, along with a stingy defense made up of seniors Lauren Fidati (Forest Hill, MD) and Amanda Nagy (Lititz, PA), junior Lauren Gehringer (Boyertown, PA) and sophomore Olivia Burgese (Collegeville, PA) have held Widener opponents to one goal or less in three of its four games.
Widener on Friday hosts Muhlenberg beginning at 7:00 pm.
