Junior Brittany Balentine (Medford, NJ) and sophomore Devan Doyle (Woodbury Heights, NJ) each had a goal and an assist for Widener, which cruised to a 5-0 victory at Immaculata in the season opener for both teams.
Widener broke the ice in the 33rd minute. Senior Caryinna Yenchak (Ashley, PA) got the ball on the left side and fed junior Brittany Harvis (Delran, NJ), who fired a 10-yard shot inside the left post.
It marked the second straight year Harvis scored the Pride's first goal of the year. She did so in Widener's 4-0 victory at Purchase.
The second goal was courtesy of a penalty kick. Freshman Victoria Batter (Woodlyn, PA) made a great run in the box and was taken down to draw the foul. Balentine converted the attempt in the 43rd minute for a 2-0 Widener lead.
The Pride's solid play late in the half helped them gain a 9-1 shots advantage in the first 45 minutes.
Widener (1-0) added another goal in the 54th minute for a 3-0 cushion. Senior Jessie Furia (Morton, PA) launched a free kick in the box that Doyle headed inside the right post.
The lead ballooned to 4-0 in the 70th minute when freshman Olivia Yoh (Wernersville, PA) netted a breakaway goal off a feed from Balentine. Freshman Kelly Buckley (Villanova, PA) scored the finale off a pass from Doyle for the Pride, who notched a result in the season opener for the third straight year (2-0-1).
Widener on Saturday plays its home opener against Franklin & Marshall, beginning at 1:00 pm.
