Sophomore Rachel Porter (Medford, NJ) scored with 47 seconds left and Widener held on for a 10-9 victory at Swarthmore for its sixth win in the last seven contests.
Porter scored with 18:32 remaining to give Widener a seemingly comfortable 8-5 lead. But Swarthmore battled back on goals from Annelise Mowry, Abbe Muller and Nichole Vanchieri for an 8-8 tie with 7:51 left.
The Pride (7-3) got the advantage back, getting a goal from freshman Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA) with 5:59 to play for a 9-8 lead. The Garnet (6-5) answered on a tally from Emily Evans with 1:47 remaining for a 9-9 tie.
Amy Vachal won the ensuing draw control for Swarthmore, which looked for the go-ahead tally. But sophomore goalkeeper Linda Salcedo (Media, PA) answered the bell by stopping Evans' shot with just over a minute left.
Widener was able to clear and took the lead for good. Porter received a pass from junior Calina Walz (Medford, NJ) and buried her third goal of the game.
Swarthmore won the draw control, but senior Jackie Elliott (Upper Darby, PA) forced Vachal into a turnover and Widener ran out the clock.
Elliott scored three times with sophomore Jen Harnden (Hershey, PA) adding two for the Pride, who overcame a 34-20 shots disadvantage. Salcedo played great with 12 saves, including nine in the opening half that kept Swarthmore's lead at just 4-3.
Mowry scored three times with Marie Mutryn adding two for the Garnet.
The victory gives Widener an insurmountable 10-6 lead in the chase for the “320 Challenge,” the inaugural series pitting the schools in their shared 19 sports. The Pride also won a point each in field hockey, volleyball, men's swimming, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's indoor track & field, women's indoor track & field, men's lacrosse and softball.
