Women's Lacrosse Loses Tough 19-15 Contest at Alvernia

(box score)

Senior Jackie Elliott (Upper Darby, PA) scored six goals, but it was not enough for Widener in a 19-15 Middle Atlantic Conference loss at Alvernia in Reading, PA.

Widener (6-3, 4-1 MAC) was in a 14-10 hole with just under 20 minutes left when it began its comeback.  Elliott, junior Calina Walz (Medford, NJ) and sophomore Jen Harnden (Hershey, PA) scored within four minutes of each other for a 14-13 deficit with 14:35 left.

But the Crusaders (7-2, 3-2) scored the next five goals to ice things.  Alyssa Verrillo netted two goals in that stretch, including one just 10 seconds after Harnden's tally to snap the Pride's five-game winning streak.

Harnden and sophomore Rachel Porter (Medford, NJ) netted four goals apiece and sophomore Linda Salcedo (Media, PA) made 11 saves for the Pride.  Harnden, junior Mellany Broomall (Clarksboro, NJ) and freshman Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA) all dished two assists.

Verrillo scored six goals, Sarah George had four and Allison Bainbridge totaled three for the Crusaders, who closed with a 42-28 shots edge.  Victoria Kern ended with six saves.

Widener on Thursday visits Swarthmore at 4:00 pm as part of the “320 Challenge,” the inaugural series pitting the schools in their 19 shared sports.  The Pride need just one more point to win the title.
