Baseball Cruises to 6-1 Triumph Over Albright

(box score)

Junior Alex Oliver (Lebanon, NJ) had three extra-base hits, two RBI and a run scored to lead Widener to a 6-1 Commonwealth Conference win over Albright in Reading, PA.

After two scoreless innings to begin the game, Widener broke through for three runs in the top of the third.  With one out, Oliver drove a triple to right.  Sophomores Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA) and Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) followed with RBI doubles, and two batters later, Sieracki scored on a throwing error.

Widener manufactured two more runs in the fourth.  #Tom Mahoney# (Norristown, PA) led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Fellow junior Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) plated him on an RBI double down the left field line.  After DeAngelis stole third, Oliver flied out to right, deep enough to score DeAngelis for a 5-0 lead.

The Pride (19-10, 12-4 CC) made it 6-0 in the sixth when Mahoney again singled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI double to center by Oliver.

Sophomore Rick Kazigian (West Chester, PA) pitched seven great innings, striking out six and allowing just four hits and one unearned run to improve to 3-2 on the season.  He retired the first eight Albright hitters he faced, and did not allow a hit until the fourth.

DeAngelis finished with two hits to extend his hitting streak to a team-season-high 17 games.  Mahoney and sophomore Bill Hollingsworth (Drexel Hill, PA) also had two hits each.

Tommy Canuso and Matt Kozlowski had two hits each for the Lions (9-25, 4-12).

Widener on Saturday closes the conference slate when it hosts Albright for a doubleheader, beginning at noon.  The Pride can clinch the regular season conference title and first seed in the conference tournament with two wins.
