Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Arcadia

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Sophomore Jason Ferrie (Royersford, PA) pitched a shutout for a 2-0 Commonwealth Conference victory over Arcadia in the opener and Widener's offense exploded for a 17-4 rout in the nightcap in Chester, PA.

 

Widener took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth of game one when junior Tom Mahoney (Norristown, PA) doubled to left field, driving in freshman Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL).  Mahoney scored an insurance run in the sixth when junior Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) singled up the middle.

 

Ferrie (4-1) faced the minimum number of batters, allowing just two hits and striking out seven.  Mahoney and junior Alex Oliver (Lebanon, NJ) each had two hits.

 

The Pride (10-7, 6-3) sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning of game two, scoring 10 runs on 10 hits.  The first six all reached base and scored, and the first three combined for six hits and six runs scored.  The inning was highlighted by DeAngelis' leadoff home run and two-run triple.

 

Widener added five more in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth.

 

Junior Kevin Culbert (Brookhaven, PA) improved to 2-1, allowing just two runs and striking out four over five innings.  Sophomore Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA) had three hits and scored three runs.  Sophomore Dan Sieracki  (Cherry Hill, NJ) had three hits and three RBI.  DeAngelis and Oliver each had two hits and three runs scored.

 

Jared Knable and Mike McElhatton each had two hits and two RBI for the Knights (3-16, 1-5).

 

Widener on Tuesday hosts The College of New Jersey at 3:30 pm.
