Peticca's Game-Winning Single Lifts Baseball to 10-Inning Triumph over Del Val

(box score)

Senior Joe Peticca (Linwood, PA) picked the perfect time for his first hit of the season, ripping an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Widener a 4-3 victory over Delaware Valley in Chester, PA.

Senior Tom Connelly (Media, PA) led off the 10th for the Pride (18-10) with a single and took second on a wild pitch from Cody Hudnall.  Sophomore Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) followed with a strikeout swinging, but reached on a passed ball that allowed Connelly to take third.

After sophomore Bill Hollingsworth (Drexel Hill, PA) was intentionally walked, Peticca lined one to left field that scored Connelly.

Widener owned a 3-0 lead after five innings.  Junior Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) ripped an RBI double in the third and sophomore Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA) added a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 margin.  DeAngelis, who ran his hitting streak to a team-season-best 16 games, led off the fifth with his four homer of the season.

The Aggies (12-19-1) got two back in the seventh on a run-scoring single from Jake Barden and an RBI single from Michael Kerns for a 3-2 deficit.  Barben struck the key blow with a two-out, solo homer to right field in the ninth for a tie game.

Freshman Brandon McCloskey (Belford, NJ) pitched great in his first collegiate start for Widener despite getting a no-decision.  Perfect through three innings, he gave up two runs – one earned – and six hits over seven innings with three strikeouts and no walks.

Brookhaven, PA sophomore Mike Pappas (2-2) allowed one hit and one walk with two strikeouts over one inning for Widener.  DeAngelis and junior Alex Oliver (Lebanon, NJ) had two hits apiece.

Hudnall (0-3) permitted one run and two hits over 1 1/3 innings.  Barben and Kellen Jarrett had three hits apiece for the Aggies.

Widener on Friday visits Albright for a Commonwealth Conference game in Reading, PA.  First pitch is 3:30 pm.
