Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Elizabethtown

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Sophomore Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA) had three hits and drove in two runs in Widener's 7-2 Commonwealth Conference victory at Elizabethtown in the opener, before going 3-for-3 with three RBI in a 5-2 win in the nightcap.

The Pride (17-9, 11-4 CC) clinched a spot in the conference tournament and move into first place by percentage points over Alvernia (13-5).

Widener took a 4-0 lead in game one before sophomore starting pitcher Jason Ferrie (Royersford, PA) even took the mound.  The Pride batted around in the top of the first, capitalizing on five walks, four of which came with two outs, and two with the bases loaded.  Junior Tom Mahoney (Norristown, PA) added a two-run single in the frame.

After Elizabethtown got one run back in the bottom of the first on a double by Brian Kiernan, Widener added two more in the second on RBI singles by Saverio and senior Tom Connelly (Media, PA).

Elizabethtown plated another run in the bottom of the third on a double by Matt Vinagro to make it 6-2, but that was as close as they would get.  Saverio capped the scoring in game one with an RBI double in the top of the seventh.

Ferrie (6-1) went the distance, striking out nine.

Freshman Dennis Hocker (Coral Spring, FL) went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, and junior Alex Oliver (Lebanon, NJ) scored two runs.

The Pride took a 3-0 lead in the third inning of game two.  Oliver delivered a two-run double, and Saverio drove him in with an RBI double.

Saverio laced another RBI single in the top of the fifth, and drove a sacrifice fly to left in the seventh.

Junior Kevin Culbert (Brookhaven, PA) recorded the win, going five innings and allowing just two runs to improve to 3-1 on the season.  Senior Alex Gelegotis (Harleysville, PA) recorded his first save of the year.

Oliver and fellow junior Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) had two hits each to extend their respective hitting streaks to a team-season-high 14 games.

Kiernan went 4-for-4 for the Blue Jays (20-12, 9-6).

Widener on Tuesday hosts Haverford for a non-conference game, beginning at 3:30 pm.
