Freshman Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL) hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to lead Widener to a 4-1 non-conference victory over Rowan in Chester, PA.
After three and a half scoreless innings, Hocker came to the plate with one on and one out, and homered deep to right to give Widener a 2-0 lead that it would never relinquish.
Rowan got one back in the top of the fifth when Matt Citro tripled to deep center, scoring Brad Woodend, who drew a leadoff walk and stole second. The next batter, Dave Lenig, appeared to tie the game on a sacrifice fly to right. However, after the throw from junior Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) came home late, Hocker fired to third and Citro was called out for leaving the base before the catch was made, ending the threat.
Widener added an insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by senior Colin Keelan (Ellicott City, MD), and plated another in the eighth when freshman Matt Hone (Newtown, PA) singled to right.
Matt Day (Plymouth Meeting, PA) recorded his first win of the season for the Pride (14-9, 8-4), striking out one in a scoreless inning, and fellow sophomore Joe Sessa (Broomall, PA) notched his first save.
Sean Bowen finished with three hits for the Profs (18-11).
Widener on Friday hosts Elizabethtown in a crucial Commonwealth Conference matchup, beginning at 3:30 pm.
