Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Lebanon Valley

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Sophomore Jason Ferrie (Royersford, PA) threw his second shutout of the year in an 8-0 Commonwealth Conference victory over Lebanon Valley in the opener before a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat in the nightcap in Chester, PA.

Widener jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game one, capitalizing on three walks.  Sophomore Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA) singled down the right field line to score junior Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA), who singled and stole second.  Sophomore Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) followed with a sacrifice fly, and junior Tom Mahoney (Norristown, PA) drove a two-run single to right.

The Pride added another run in the second on a two-out single by junior Alex Oliver (Lebanon, NJ).  Mahoney made it 6-0 in the third with a sacrifice fly, and Saverio and senior Tom Connelly (Media, PA) added RBI singles in the sixth to make it 8-0.

Ferrie (5-1) struck out five and allowed just five hits and a walk.  Oliver went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Saverio had two hits and two RBI in extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

Grant Wiest and Dylan Holland had two hits each for the Dutchmen.

The Pride put up another crooked number in the first inning of game two on a two-out, two-run single by freshman Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL).

Lebanon Valley got one back in the top of the fifth on a two-out single by Wiest.

After junior Kevin Culbert (Brookhaven, PA) retired the Dutchmen in order in the top of the sixth, senior Mike Villari (Holland, PA) drove an RBI single to left in the bottom of the frame for a 3-1 Widener lead.

Culbert pitched very well through the first six innings, allowing just four hits and one run.  He hit Dylan Holland to start the top of the seventh and then issued a walk to Ryan Schwartz.  Senior Alex Gelegotis (Harleysville, PA) relieved Culbert at that point.  Gelegotis retired Aaron Mills on a sacrifice bunt that put runners on second and third with one out.  He then retired Colt Zarilla on a groundout to third, but Wiest drove a three-run homer down the right field line to put Lebanon Valley ahead, 4-3.

Saverio led off the bottom of the inning with a walk, but the Pride could not manage to score him.

The Pride (13-9, 8-4 CC), who opened the day with the conference's highest fielding percentage (.960), received spectacular diving catches from Villari in center field, DeAngelis in right, and Saverio in left.

Connelly and Villari had two hits each.  Oliver extended his hitting streak to a team-season high 11 games.

Nate Blough got the win for the Dutchmen (20-9, 8-4) to improve to 6-0.  Dustin Deibert recorded the save, and also had two hits.  Wiest had two hits and four RBI in the game.
