Baseball Wins Wild 10-Inning Contest at Arcadia

(box score)

Tom Mahoney (Norristown, PA) drove home what proved to be the deciding run in the top of the 10th inning with fellow junior Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) and sophomore Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) getting four RBI apiece for Widener in a wild 16-13 Commonwealth Conference win at Arcadia in Philadelphia.

Junior Jason Brooke (Collegeville, PA) opened the 10th inning with a walk, stole second and took third as senior Tom Connelly (Media, PA) reached on a fielder's choice.  Mahoney followed with a single, his fourth hit of the day and third RBI, for a 14-13 lead.

Connelly scored on a passed ball and DeAngelis added a run-scoring single for the final.  Widener (8-7, 4-3 CC) retired the side in the bottom of the frame.

The fireworks were just concluding as each team scored eight runs in their half of the seventh inning.  Widener in the seventh opened a 13-4 lead with DeAngelis rapping a three-run triple and Sieracki lacing a three-run homer for his first long ball of the year.

But the Knights (3-14, 1-3) rallied in the bottom of the frame for a 13-12 game thanks to Marc Gottfried's two-run double and Dan Morris' two-RBI single.  Mike McElhatton had an RBI single in eighth for a tie game.

Sophomore Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA) had five hits and DeAngelis added four for the Pride, who recorded a 23-20 hits edge.

Broomall, PA sophomore Joe Sessa (2-1) gave up one hit over 2 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts for Widener.

Morris went 4-for-4 and Rich Schlamowitz had three RBI for the Knights.  Schlamowitz also gave up three runs – two earned – and two hits over 1 1/3 innings.

These teams battle on Saturday in a doubleheader at Widener, beginning at noon.
