Baseball Drops 13-6 Contest to Alvernia

(box score)

Widener had multiple opportunities with runners in scoring position, but could not get enough clutch hits and was dealt a 13-6 loss to Alvernia in Chester, PA.

Alvernia scored once in each of the first three innings.  Widener countered with two in the bottom of the third on a double by senior Tom Connelly (Media, PA) that drove in two.  After being blanked in the fourth, Alvernia scored three in each of the next three innings to make it 12-2 after seven.

Widener had its opportunities to cut into the lead, but situational hitting was a struggle for most of the game, as they left 12 runners on base in the first six innings.  The Pride showed life in the bottom of the eighth, breaking through for four runs, but Alvernia added one in the top of the ninth, and sent Widener down in order in the bottom.

Sophomore Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA) had three hits, scored two runs, and drove in two more for the Pride (7-7, 3-3).  Connelly had two hits and two RBI.  Sophomore Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) finished with a single, three walks, and a run scored, and senior Mike Villari (Holland, PA) had two hits.

Chuck Krichling drove in three runs for the Crusaders (13-5, 3-3).  Chris Ray and Steve Bealer each scored three runs, and Chazz Losito had four hits.  Andrew Kirk (3-1) recorded the win, striking out six and allowing just two unearned runs over six innings.

Widener on Tuesday hosts No. 7 Kean at 3:30 pm.
