Sophomore Rachel Porter (Medford, NJ) scored two of her team's last four goals, including the decider with 3:20 left as Widener erased a three-goal deficit for an enthralling 13-12 Middle Atlantic Conference win over Eastern at Edith R. Dixon Field.
Down 12-9 with just under 12 minutes left, Widener began its comeback. Senior Jackie Elliott (Upper Darby, PA) scored the last of her game-high six goals on a free-position shot to make it a two-goal contest.
Porter scored with 8:13 remaining for a 12-11 match and sophomore Jen Harnden (Hershey, PA) tallied with 6:18 left for a tie game.
Harden won the ensuing draw control and the Pride (4-2, 2-0 MAC) worked for a good shot. On its second attempt in the possession, Porter took a pass from freshman Julia Costello (Brookhaven, PA) and scored for Widener's first lead since 1-0.
Eastern (2-4, 2-1) had three chances to tie with Kelly Dando hitting the right post and Grace Griffith firing high. Griffith had another chance with 12 seconds remaining, but sophomore Linda Salcedo (Media, PA) stood tall for the save that clinched the win.
Elliott scored six goals on seven shots with Costello netting a pair for Widener, which has won three straight and is off to its best league start since beginning 3-0 in 2005. Junior Calina Walz (Medford, NJ) dished three assists and Salcedo made eight saves.
Griffith netted five goals, Courtney Reinhold had three and Lindsey Corbitt made 12 saves for the Eagles, who held a 10-6 lead early in the second half.
Widener on Saturday hosts Lebanon Valley, beginning at 1:00 pm.
