Men's Soccer Handed 2-1 Loss at DeSales

(box score)

Despite getting a goal early in the second half and outshooting its opponent for the 10th time this season, Widener was on the wrong end of a 2-1 decision at DeSales in Center Valley, PA.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the first 17 minutes for a 2-0 lead. Steve Krause tallied in the seventh minute after Derek Long's header was saved by freshman goalkeeper Jakub Valdner (Bratislava, Slovakia). Long got a goal of his own off a pass from Jonathan Balfour to double the margin.

Widener cracked the scoreboard in the 50th minute for a 2-1 deficit. Senior Bill Stangroom (Bethlehem, PA) took a pass from sophomore Joe Brydges (Philadelphia, PA) and netted his first goal of the season.

Things looked even better for the Pride in the 56th minute when the Bulldogs' Scott Nicholls was sent marching with a direct red card. Widener played a man up from that point and was awarded a penalty kick in the 73rd minute, but sophomore DJ DiPaola (Havertown, PA) had his attempt stopped by Mike Thompson.

Junior Gareth Cooper (Royersford, PA) and freshman Anthony Pezzotti (Newtown Square, PA) each had three shots for Widener, which closed with a 17-12 advantage. Valdner ended with two saves.

Balfour and Long fired three shots apiece for DeSales. Thompson amassed five saves.

Widener on Saturday closes its regular season against Lebanon Valley, beginning at 3:00 pm in Annville, PA.
