Jack Brennan (Stratford, NJ) scored 16 points and fellow sophomore Aaquil Atkins (Alexandria, VA) keyed the decisive run for Widener, which found its groove in the second half for a 67-60 victory over Carnegie Mellon at the Casa Mia Holiday Tournament in Center Valley, PA.
Atkins scored six points during Widener's 15-0 run over four minutes, which helped the squad open a 58-48 lead with 9:43 left. Carnegie Mellon closed to 63-60 with 1:32 remaining, but junior Chris McDevitt (Doylestown, PA) converted a three-point play with 1:05 to play for a six-point contest.
Brennan shot 7-of-11 from the floor and hauled in nine rebounds for the Pride (8-3), who shot 49 percent (25-of-51) from the floor in their first game in 22 days. Junior Jarrell Nelson (Waldorf, MD) scored 11 points and senior Jamarr Johnson (Pittsgrove, NJ) added nine and seven rebounds.
Jack Anderson scored 28 points on 8-of-16 shooting and Matthew Pettit added 12 for the Tartans (4-4).
Widener on Monday plays DeSales at 8:00 pm to close the tournament.
