Sophomore Brittany Balentine (Medford, NJ) scored with 13 seconds remaining for Widener, which upended FDU-Florham 2-1 at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium for its fourth victory in five matches.
Junior Jessie Furia (Morton, PA) began the play by lifting a free kick to senior Sam Baer (Lancaster, PA) inside the box. Baer got a pass over to Balentine, who found the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season.
Widener (8-1-1) matched its best start in school history, also accomplished in 1995, and moved to 3-1 at home this season.
FDU (4-5-1) broke the ice in the fourth minute as Brittany Kanickij scored off a feed from Ashley Vieira. Widener leveled it in the 75th minute thanks to Baer netting her third goal of the season with freshman Alyssa Scala (Sayville, NY) notching the assist.
Baer ended with four shots for Widener, which closed with a 12-11 edge that included 9-2 in the second half. Senior Alee Gunter (Maple Shade, NJ) made three saves in the opening half and freshman Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) had one in the second half.
Kanickij attempted five shots and Lauren Albrecht had four saves in the second half for the Devils.
Widener on Saturday opens Commonwealth Conference play at Lycoming. Kickoff in Williamsport, PA is 4:00 pm.
