Women's Soccer Off to Best Start in School History With 4-1 Triumph at Goucher

(boxscore)

Sophomore Brittany Balentine (Medford, NJ) scored twice for Widener, which is off to its best start in school history thanks to a 4-1 victory at Goucher.

Balentine wasted no time, getting a free kick from junior Jessie Furia (Morton, PA) and scoring in the eighth minute.  Less than two minutes later, sophomore Brittany Harvis (Delran, NJ) scored her fifth goal of the season thanks to assists from junior Caryinna Yenchak (Ashley, PA) and freshman Nicole Repetto (Glen Mills, PA).

Yenchak in the 15th minute buried her team-leading sixth goal of the season for a 3-0 Widener lead.  Harvis and freshman Devan Doyle (Woodbury Heights, NJ) were credited with the helpers.

Kristen Gartside scored in the 35th minute for Goucher (2-5), but Widener got it back in the 60th minute as Balentine tallied off another set piece from Furia.

The Pride controlled play with a 20-8 shots edge, including six apiece from Harvis and senior Sarah Schaffer (Deptford, NJ).  Senior Alee Gunter (Maple Shade, NJ) made four saves.

Kellen Matthews stopped eight shots for Goucher.

Widener (7-0-1) bested the previous mark of 7-1 set by the 1995 team, which in its inaugural season won the Middle Atlantic Conference title and played in the ECAC Tournament.

Widener on Thursday hosts No. 20 Swarthmore as part of the “320 Challenge,” beginning at 7:00 pm at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
