Junior Megan Scarpinato (Sewell, NJ) and senior Ellen Etzweiler (Landisville, PA) scored 71 seconds apart in the opening half, igniting Widener to a 4-1 season-opening victory over Immaculata at Edith R. Dixon Field.
Scarpinato in the 13th minute tallied in front off a pass from freshman Nicole Nardone (Garwood, NJ), giving Widener a 1-0 lead. Etzweiler took her turn by converting a feed from sophomore Natalie Gifford (Morton, PA).
Lauren Bigos scored in the 18th minute for the Mighty Macs (0-1) to make 2-1. But junior Danielle Dudley (Bristol, PA) restored the Pride's two goal margin in the 32nd minute with senior Dina Haritonidis (Upper Darby, PA) notching the assist.
Senior Brittany Dippolito (Pennsauken, NJ) tallied off Scarpinato's pass in the second half, helping Widener (1-0) end with a 21-3 shots edge and an 18-1 cushion in penalty corners.
Junior Megan Purcell (Perkasie, PA), named second team All-Commonwealth Conference last year, needed only one save in just under 51 minutes. Scarpinato closed with six shots.
Britt Worthington had nine saves for Immaculata.
Widener hits the road Saturday to visit Swarthmore for a noon start.
