Baseball Cruises to 19-3 Triumph Over Arcadia

(boxscore)

Widener jumped on Arcadia early and never looked back in a 19-3 Commonwealth Conference win.

The Pride (14-11-1, 4-3 CC) put things out of reach with a seven-run fourth inning to grab a 14-2 lead. Senior Colin McHale (Wynnewood, PA) highlighted the frame with a two-run homer for his third long ball of the year.

Sophomore Jason Brooke (Collegeville, PA) collected three of Widener's 17 hits, including two doubles, and sophomore Tom Mahoney (Norristown, PA) drove home three runs. Mahoney, McHale, sophomore Alex Oliver (Lebanon, NJ) and freshman Eric Gutierrez (Brooklyn, NY) all had two hits.

Broomall, PA freshman Joe Sessa (2-3), gave up three runs and seven hits over six innings for Widener. Sophomores Rich Brovero (Waldwick, NJ) and Kevin Culbert (Brookhaven, PA) combined to yield only two hits over three relief innings.

Matt Pempkowski and Tim Wiand had three hits apiece for the Knights (3-22, 0-7).  Steve Romond (2-5) allowed 12 runs and 10 hits over three innings.

These teams on Saturday play a doubleheader in Glenside, beginning at noon.
