Baseball Handed Tough 7-5 Loss by Lebanon Valley

(boxscore)

Widener squandered a four-run lead and dropped the rubber contest, 7-5, of its three-game, Commonwealth Conference series with Lebanon Valley.

Widener (12-11-1, 3-3 CC) grabbed a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) lined an RBI double, Tom Mahoney (Norristown, PA) had a run-scoring single and fellow sophomore Alex Oliver (Lebanon, NJ) added a two RBI double.

The Dutchmen (14-13-1, 5-1) got three in the fifth after there were two outs and no one on base, closing to 5-4. Grant Wiest singled, Colt Zarilla doubled and Joe Soupik followed with a three-run homer down the right-field line for his sixth long ball of the year.

LVC plated three in the seventh to close the scoring. Aaron Mills had a fielder's choice grounder that scored Zarilla and Bert Malloy ripped a two-run, go-ahead double.

Widener in the ninth loaded the bases with two out, but junior Mike Villari (Holland, PA) popped out to second base to end it.

Oliver rapped three hits with Mahoney, Sieracki, junior Colin Keelan (Ellicott City, MD) and sophomore Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) getting two apiece.

Brookhaven, PA freshman Mike Pappas (3-1) gave up three runs and three hits over four innings for the Pride.

Brian Miller (2-2) allowed two hits over four scoreless innings for the Dutchmen. Malloy and Soupik closed with three hits apiece.

Widener on Tuesday visits College of New Jersey, which just dropped out of the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Division III Poll. First pitch in Ewing, NJ is 3:30 pm.
