Third-seeded Widener plated seven runs in the top of the second inning and rolled to a 16-2 triumph over No. 2 seed Lebanon Valley at the Commonwealth Conference Tournament in West Lawn, PA.
Widener (20-15-1) on Friday advances to the winners bracket of the double-elimination tournament against No. 4 seed Albright, which also is unbeaten after its upset of top-seeded Elizabethtown. Game time is 3:00 pm.
Junior Mike Villari (Holland, PA), Tom Mahoney (Norristown, PA) and fellow sophomore Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) set the table in the second inning with RBI singles and a 3-0 lead. Freshman Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA) then delivered the goods with a grand slam for his fourth long ball of the season.
Mahoney in the third inning ripped a two-run single for a 9-0 cushion and Dutchmen reliever Jake Becker uncorked two wild pitches in the frame for two more runs and an 11-run margin.
Junior Colin Keelan (Ellicott City, MD) in the seventh blasted a three-run homer, his fourth long ball of the year. DeAngelis and freshman Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) collected three hits apiece for the Pride, who ended with 15.
Royersford, PA freshman Jason Ferrie (5-0) continued to stand out, striking out seven over six innings and yielding one run and five hits.
The victory clinched Widener's school-record, fifth-straight 20-win season.
Caleb Fick (1-2) permitted seven runs and seven hits over two innings for the Dutchmen (19-20-1), who committed six errors and left 13 runners on base.
Lebanon Valley on Friday battles Elizabethtown at 11:00 am in an elimination game.
