Baseball Takes Two From Albright

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener rallied for a thrilling 2-1 victory in game one over Albright and cruised to an 11-3 triumph in game two of Commonwealth Conference action.
 
Albright (9-9, 1-2 CC) in game one grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning on its only hit of the game, an RBI single from Jason Dunkelberger.
 
But Widener came back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, starting with a solo home run from freshman Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA)Tom Connelly (Media, PA) reached on an error and was sacrificed to second by fellow junior Colin Keelan (Ellicott City, MD). Two batters later, junior Mike Villari (Holland, PA) hit a grounder that was thrown away by shortstop Justin Danser and allowed Connelly to score the winning run.
 
Coatesville, PA junior Dan Gross (2-2) struck out six over seven innings, yielding one run and four walks over seven innings for Widener (10-8-1, 2-1).
 
Tim Flannery (6-5) allowed two runs – one earned – and three hits over 6 2/3 innings for the Lions.
 
Widener in the rubber match of the three-game series plated four runs in the bottom of the second for a 4-0 lead. Freshman Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) lifted a sacrifice fly, Villari and junior Dennis Morgan (Blue Bell, PA) had consecutive RBI doubles and sophomore Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) added a run-scoring single.
 
Villari ended the game 3-for-3, all doubles, and Morgan closed with four RBI to help the Pride finish with 15 hits.
 
Brookhaven, PA freshman Mike Pappas (3-0) permitted three runs – two earned – and three hits over five innings for Widener. Shane Stein (0-3) was charged with five runs and six hits over three innings for Albright.
 
Widener on Monday visits Swarthmore for a 3:30 pm start.
