Widener could not take advantage of a solid outing from freshman starter Jason Ferrie (Royersford, PA) in a tough 5-4, 10-inning loss at Albright in Reading, PA.
Ferrie notched a season-best nine strikeouts over seven innings, yielding two runs and six hits with three walks. It also was his longest outing of the year.
The Pride (8-8-1, 0-1 CC) looked in great shape in the seventh inning, when junior Dennis Morgan (Blue Bell, PA) cracked a two-run homer for a 3-1 lead.
After the Lions (9-7, 1-0) got one back in the bottom of the seventh, the Pride grabbed a 4-2 cushion in the ninth as junior Mike Villari (Holland, PA) lined an RBI single.
But Albright scored twice in the bottom of the ninth on a throwing error by junior third baseman Tom Connelly (Media, PA) off a grounder from Casey Lawrence.
The Lions won it in the 10th as Justin Danser lined a two-out RBI single.
Jason Dunkelberger (1-0) got the win, surrendering no runs and one hit over 1 2/3 innings. Lawrence pitched solidly, striking out 13 and allowing four runs -- two earned -- and six hits over 8 1/3 innings.
Brookhaven, PA sophomore Kevin Culbert (2-2) gave up three runs -- one earned -- and one hit over two innings for the Pride.
These teams on Saturday square off in Chester for a noon doubleheader.
