Widener got off to a rough start and could not overcome it in an 8-2 loss at Division II Kutztown.
The Golden Bears (22-5) raced to a 7-0 lead after four innings and were never headed. Shayne Houck and Chad Lightcap laced RBI doubles in the first inning to get things started for a 2-0 lead. Lightcap, Jared Frey and Michael Dugan each drove home runs in the third for 5-0 margin.
Freshman Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) and junior Dennis Morgan (Blue Bell, PA) each had RBI singles for the Pride, who managed only six hits.
Broomall, PA freshman Joe Sessa (1-2) was charged with eight runs – six earned – and eight hits over five innings for the Pride (8-7-1).
Jordan Smith (4-0) allowed one run and two hits over one relief inning to get the victory. Houck ended 3-for-3.
Widener on Friday opens Commonwealth Conference play at Albright, beginning at 3:30 pm in Reading, PA.
