Widener played tough against undefeated Swarthmore, but gave up a goal from Marie Mutryn 59 seconds into the second overtime for a 13-12 loss at Edith R. Dixon Field.
Widener (3-3) bolted to a 6-1 lead in the first 21 minutes thanks to two goals from junior Brittany Dippolito (Pennsauken, NJ). Swarthmore (4-0) rallied for seven of the next eight markers to grab its first lead, 8-7, with 13:07 left in regulation as Mutryn and Emily Evans scored twice in that run.
The Pride looked in great shape as freshman Jen Harden (Hershey, PA) found the back of the net with 47 seconds left in the second half for a 12-11 cushion. But the Garnet won the draw control and Evans scored her fifth goal of the game with 32 seconds left for the equalizer.
The mandatory six-minute, non-sudden-death overtime went scoreless before Swarthmore tallied. Mutryn took the ball behind the net off a turnover, cut in front and scored her third goal of the game to end it.
Amy Vachel scored twice and Allison Grein made nine saves for Swarthmore, which ended with a 48-33 shots edge.
Dippolito scored a career-best three goals with Harden and sophomore Mellany Broomall (Clarksboro, NJ) netting a pair each for Widener. Freshman Shelley O'Neill (Brookfield, NH) played solidly with 15 saves that included three in overtime.
Widener on Saturday hosts Elizabethtown in a Middle Atlantic Conference match, beginning at 1:00 pm.
