Widener scored seven runs in its final two at-bats and amazingly left its home opener with a 14-14 tie against Neumann in a game called after eight innings due to darkness.
Neumann (8-5-1) plated 11 runs in the top of the seventh inning on 10 walks – one intentional – and only three hits for a 14-7 lead. Kevin Lengyel had three RBI in the frame.
The Pride (4-5-1) rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh on only two hits for a 14-11 game. Freshman Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) launched the key blow with a two-run homer for his first career long ball.
Sophomore Josiah Fischer (Nazareth, PA) blasted a two-run homer, his second of the year, in the bottom of the eighth for a 14-13 deficit. Sophomore Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) drew a two-out walk and reached second on an error. After senior pinch-hitter Mike Cahill (Spring Lake, NJ) walked, freshman Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA) lined the tying single that plated DeAngelis.
Saverio closed with four RBI as he and junior Tom Connelly (Media, PA) had three hits apiece. Saverio and senior Colin McHale (Wynnewood, PA) also homered for Widener.
Lengyel notched three RBI with Matt Gallagher and Matt Grossi each recording three hits for the Knights.
Widener wasted a solid outing from freshman Jason Ferrie (Royersford, PA), who allowed just three runs – two earned – and six hits over six innings. He left with the Pride holding a 7-3 lead.
Widener on Saturday hosts Eastern for a doubleheader that begins at noon.
