Despite senior Becky Tyler (Wynnewood, PA) notching her seventh career double-double, Widener was handed a 63-59 loss by Neumann at Schwartz Center.
Tyler closed with 13 points and a career-best 17 rebounds, besting her previous mark of 16 set against Neumann on November 24, 2007.
Things looked real good at halftime for Widener (3-2), which opened a 36-27 lead thanks to holding the visitors to only 28 percent (9-of-32) shooting. Freshman Lil Carney (Narbeth, PA) scored eight points in that span and Tyler hauled in 12 rebounds, including nine in the first four minutes.
Neumann (3-2) began to assert itself in the second half, opening on an 11-3 run to close to 39-38 with 12:31 left. Brittany Whetts netted five points in that span.
The Knights grabbed their first lead, 53-32, with 3:27 remaining on a free throw by Krista DiRomualdo. She hit again from the line with 41 seconds to play for a 60-55 Neumann lead with 41 seconds left.
Carney made a layup with 32 seconds to go for a 60-57 game before Katie Young hit 1-of-2 from the stripe one second later for a four-point contest.
Tyler's layup with 16 seconds to go cut it to 61-59 and the drama increased with Young misfiring twice from the stripe. Widener had its chance, but Carney's 3-pointer bounced off the rim and Bethany Humenik grabbed the rebounds.
Humenik converted twice from the line with two seconds remaining for the final.
Carney ended with 13 points for Widener, which was held to 22 percent (3-of-14) shooting overall and was 3-of-14 from 3-point range.
Whetts had 15 points and 14 rebounds with Young contributing 12 and 12 for the Knights, who shot 31 percent (18-of-58) and overcame hitting only 27-for-41 from the line. Caitlin Agnew scored 13 points for Neumann, which outscored Widener 36-23 in the second half.
Widener on Monday visits King's for a 6:00 pm start in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
