Sophomore Brittany Balentine (Medford, NJ) scored three goals for Widener, which defeated Alvernia 6-3 in a Commonwealth Conference match at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
Balentine received a pass from junior Rachel Kyprianou (Shrewsbury, PA) and buried it from 10 yards out in the 37th minute for the first goal of the game to give Widener a lead it would never relinquish. Balentine scored again less than six minutes later with help from senior Sam Baer (Lancaster, PA) and completed the hat trick on a penalty kick with just 14 seconds left in regulation.
Balentine becomes the 13th player in school history to record a hat trick. She is the sixth player to accomplish this in the last six years and the eighth in the last three campaigns.
Sophomore Brittany Harvis (Delran, NJ) scored twice for Widener on assists from Baer and senior Ashley Koroncai (Oreland, PA). Freshman Devan Doyle (Woodbury Heights, NJ) also tallied for Widener on Kyprianou's second assist of the game.
Harvis took seven shots for the Pride (11-2-2, 2-1 CC), who closed with a 28-6 shots advantage. Balentine and Doyle added six shots each.
The victory was the 100th of head coach Brian Sheehan's career. The winningest coach in program history, he now holds a 100-52-16 record and is 49-21-6 at Widener.
Alvernia received goals from Jasmine Morales, Amy Mesce, and Erin Stone. Felicia Sippel had two assists and Lindsay Neubauer added an assist for the Crusaders (3-12, 0-3).
Widener on Saturday travels to Elizabethtown for a Commonwealth Conference game at 2:00 pm.
