Senior Matt Sosna (Stratford, NJ) this season has made tournaments his personal showcase and the final of the Holiday Inn Invitational was no exception, scoring 27 points in Widener's 87-71 victory at Buffalo State for the title.
Sosna was named tournament MVP for the second time this season and made his third all tournament-team in that span. He closed the final with 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting with eight rebounds over 30 minutes. Sosna ended the weekend with 48 points on 19-of-27 shooting and 17 rebounds, guiding the Pride (9-3) to their fourth straight victory.
Sosna also was named MVP of the Oki Data Americas Tip-Off on November 22 and made the all-tournament team at the Monarch Classic on November 16.
Widener took control with a 15-2 run for a 69-52 edge with 10:41 remaining. Sosna and senior Charles Jones (Philadelphia, PA) netted four points in that span and sophomore Chris McDevitt (Doylestown, PA) nailed a 3-pointer.
Jones poured in 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting and also was named to the all-tournament team. His effort helped the Pride shoot 52 percent (16-of-31) from the field in the second half and 49 percent (32-of-65) overall.
Jamar Gray scored 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting and Antonio Speed netted 13 for the Bengals (1-7), who shot 46 percent (29-of-63) overall.
Widener on Wednesday opens Commonwealth Conference play at home against Albright as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. The women's game starts at 6:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 8:00 pm.
