Widener's women's soccer team will host “Breast Cancer Awareness Night” during its home opener Wednesday against Neumann.
Game time is 7:00 pm at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium and fans are asked to wear pink to show their support.
Widener will be wearing pink jerseys for the match and fans can bid on them at the stadium. Donations also will be collected for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a global breast cancer movement founded in 1982.
Afterward, the Player of the Match for each team will receive a special pink soccer ball.
Widener is one of six teams who in the last two years have held events to raise money for cancer awareness. The list also includes softball, women's lacrosse, volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for all women and the leading overall cause of cancer death in women between ages 20 and 59. In the United States, breast cancer is expected to be diagnosed every three minutes and a woman will die from breast cancer every 13 minutes.
