3/29/08 -- Widener used three home runs to post a 10-7 victory at Commonwealth Conference foe Elizabethtown before a gutwrenching 5-4 in the second game.
Senior
Matt Fischer (Bensalem, PA) got things rolling in the third inning of game one with his team-leading sixth home run of the year, a three-run shot for a 3-1 Pride lead. He collected a hit in the second game, extending his career-best hitting streak to 13 games.
Senior
Zak Atiram (Old Bridge, NJ) in the fifth inning launched a solo homer for a 5-5 tie. Senior
Tom Fien (Millville, NJ) later in the frame had an RBI single for a 6-5 lead.
Junior
Mike Cahill (Spring Lake, NJ) capped a four-run sixth inning with a three-run long ball for a 10-5 margin. Like Atiram, it was Cahill's second homer of the season for Widener (16-4, 1-2 CC).
Palm, PA senior
Tristan Harner (3-1) gave up seven runs – five earned – and seven hits over 5 1/3 innings with two strikeouts. Freshman
Kevin Culbert (Brookhaven, PA) allowed just one hit over 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the save.
Matt Kutz (2-2) was charged with six runs – four earned – and seven hits over 4 2/3 innings for the Blue Jays (11-7, 2-1 CC).
Widener in the fourth inning of game two grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fourth thanks to an RBI single from
Tom Mahoney (Norristown, PA) and a bases-loaded walk to fellow freshman
Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA). The margin grew to 4-0 in the fifth on Atiram's RBI double and Cahill's sacrifice fly.
But Elizabethtown scored five times in the bottom of the sixth for a stunning victory. Tom Semanek had a two-run double in the frame and Eric Luff lifted a sacrifice fly to give the Blue Jays the lead for good.
The Pride wasted a great outing from junior
Jerry Benedict (Drexel Hill, PA), who allowed four runs – three earned – and six hits over five innings with six strikeouts. Culbert (2-1) gave up one run and two hits over one inning.
Chris Minakowski (2-1) won in relief, yielding only one walk over three hitless innings.
DeAngelis had two hits in the game one and one in the nightcap, extending his team-season-best hitting streak to 17 games.
Widener hits the road Tuesday to face Delaware Valley, beginning at 3:30 pm.
