Baseball Wins 12th Straight, 10-8 at Marywood

3/25/08 -- Senior Matt Fischer (Bensalem, PA) homered twice and freshman Jason Brooke (Collegeville, PA) notched his first collegiate victory for Widener, winners of 12 straight games with a 10-8 triumph over Marywood in Scranton, PA. 

Widener (15-2) took the lead for good, 6-5, with two runs in the top of fourth inning. Matt Fischer had an RBI groundout and freshman Josiah Fisher (Nazareth, PA) added a run-scoring single.

Matt Fischer in the sixth inning cracked his second homer of the game and fourth of the year, a two-run shot to make it 8-5. Freshman Alex Neiman (Gilbertsville, PA) and junior Mike Cahill (Spring Lake, NJ) both hit long balls in the seventh for a 10-5 margin.

Brooke (1-0) struck out six over seven innings, permitting eight runs -- four earned -- and seven hits. Freshman Kevin Culbert (Brookhaven, PA) notched his Commonwealth Conference-leading fifth save, striking out four and allowing just one hit over two innings.

Fischer ended with three hits and four RBI, extending his hitting streak to a career-high-tying 10 games. Freshman Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) had two of Widener's 15 hits and owns a team-season-best 14-game hitting streak.

Joseph Valvano (0-2) gave up four runs and six hits over three innings for the Pacers (3-5). David Lewis had three hits and a home run.

Widener on Friday opens conference play at home against Elizabethtown. Game time is 3:30 pm.
