Alex Neiman's Hitting and Ryan Walter's Pitching Help Baseball to its 11th Straight Win, 10-2 Over Swarthmore

3/21/08 -- Freshman Alex Neiman (Gilbertsville, PA) drove home three runs and junior Ryan Walter (Quakertown, PA) remained perfect on the mound for Widener, winners of 11 straight games with a 10-2 triumph over Swarthmore.

Widener (14-2) broke open the game with five runs in the fifth inning for a 7-1 lead. Neiman delivered the key hit with a two-out, two-run double to end the scoring. Sophomore Mike Villari (Holland, PA) in the inning had a run-scoring single, senior Matt Fischer (Bensalem, PA) contributed an RBI single and junior Colin McHale (Wynnewood, PA) lifted a sacrifice fly.

Neiman also had an RBI double in the second inning and has a hit in nine of his last 10 games.

Walter (4-0) has won all of his starts this season, amassing 18 strikeouts and just seven walks over 26 2/3 innings. Today, he yielded just one run and five hits over six innings with four strikeouts and two walks.

Fischer went 3-for-3 with two RBI and extended his hitting streak to nine games, one shy of his career best. Freshman Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) rapped two hits and ran his team-season-high hitting streak to 13 games.

Neil Mejia (2-2) was charged with seven runs and six hits over 4 2/3 innings for Swarthmore (6-5). Matt Corso collected two hits.

Widener's scheduled doubleheader Saturday at Dickinson has been postponed and no make-up date was announced. The team returns to action Tuesday at Marywood, beginning at 3:00 pm in Scranton, PA.
