2/9/08 -- Despite a team-season-high 26 points from sophomore Charles Jones (Philadelphia, PA), Widener surrendered an eight-point lead with less than seven minutes left and was dealt a 75-68 Commonwealth Conference loss at Lycoming in Williamsport, PA.
All looked good for Widener (17-4, 3-3 CC) when junior Nyere Miller (Washington, DC) nailed a 3-pointer with 6:56 remaining for a 63-55 lead. But Lycoming (13-8, 4-2) ended on a 20-5 run to hand the visitors just their third loss in 12 games.
The Warriors took the lead for good with 37 seconds left, 69-67, when David Wilson nailed just his second 3-pointer of the day on seven attempts. Jones hit 1-of-2 from the line with 28 seconds to go, but Wilson drilled a pair from the stripe with 22 seconds remaining for a 71-68 contest.
Sophomore Bobby Edmunds (Linwood, NJ) committed a turnover on the next possession and Eric Anthony made Widener pay by making two free throws with 14 seconds left for a 73-68 game.
Greg Sye hit twice from the line with six seconds remaining, ending a day in which Lycoming shot 16-for-22.
Jones, who scored 13 points in each half, shot 9-of-15 overall from the floor and reached at least 20 points for the sixth time this season. Miller poured in a season-best 21 points to fall one shy of his career high, but scored just six points in the second half.
Widener shot 44 percent (23-of-52) from the floor, but was only 15-of-23 from the line.
Wilson scored 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting and Sye added 16 and nine rebounds for the Warriors, who shot 47 percent (26-of-55) overall and 7-of-19 from 3-point range. Anthony netted 15 points and Kevin Morris added 12.
Widener on Wednesday hosts Lebanon Valley at 8:00 pm, following the women's game at 6:00 pm. Fans are asked to wear pink as part of the school's “Think Pink” initiative in the fight against breast cancer.
