Senior Matt Sosna (Stratford, NJ) had 19 points and 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double, lifting Widener to an 88-56 rout of Valley Forge Christian in Phoenixville, PA.
The Pride (5-2) scored 12 straight points to open a 31-13 lead with 5:54 left in the first half. Junior Bobby Edmunds (Linwood, NJ) netted five points in that span.
Widener was in control by halftime, cruising to a 41-24 lead by shooting 42 percent (16-of-38) from the floor and holding Valley Forge Christian to only 32 percent (9-of-28).
The Pride did not sit back after intermission, opening the second half on a 16-2 run for a 57-26 cushion with 15:48 left. Senior Nyere Miller (Washington, DC) continued his torrid play with eight points and two 3-pointers in the burst.
Sosna could not be stopped in the post, hitting 7-of-11 from the floor over just 25 minutes for his fifth career double-double. This helped Widener shoot 46 percent (36-of-79) overall from the field.
Edmunds and senior Charles Jones (Philadelphia, PA) netted 12 points piece for the Pride, who shot a season-best 9-of-21 from 3-point range. Miller had 10 points, five rebounds and five steals, sophomore Chris McDevitt (Doylestown, PA) notched 10 points and three 3-pointers, and freshman Jack Brennan (Stratford, NJ) hauled in eight rebounds.
Mike Stum scored 14 points for the Patriots (6-3), who shot only 36 percent (21-of-58) from the field.
Widener is home Monday against Gwynedd-Mercy, beginning at 7:00 pm at Schwartz Center.
