Widener gave its best against the eighth-ranked team in the country, but suffered a 7-0 loss at Messiah in the Commonwealth Conference final in Grantham, PA.
The loss was a tough end to a great run for the Pride (9-8-3), who advanced to the final with Wednesday's 1-0 semifinal upset at top-seeded Lebanon Valley. Widener was 6-2 in its last eight matches entering tonight.
Widener was playing in the conference final for the first time in school history.
Messiah broke the ice in the 17th minute when Geoff Pezon took a pass from Calvin Todd and buried a shot for his team-leading 17th goal of the season. The Falcons three minutes later made it 2-0 as Josh Sanders scored off a header from Derek Black.
Black, Nick Thompson and Danny Thompson also tallied in the first half for the Falcons (16-2-2), who opened a 5-0 halftime lead.
