No. 7 Widener opened with red-hot shooting in the first half, but went ice cold in the second and that led to an 80-67 loss at King's in the final of the Ramada Inn/Monarch Classic.
Widener (1-1) shot 50 percent (15-of-30) from the floor in the opening half and drilled three 3-pointers, but hit just 35 percent (9-of-26) in the second half, 2-of-12 from 3-point range and 60 percent (12-for-20) from the line.
The Monarchs (2-0) shot 48 percent (13-of-27) in the second half and 50 percent (27-of-54) overall. They also hit six 3-pointers for the game and canned 91 percent (20-for-22) from the line.
Senior Charles Jones (Philadelphia, PA) scored 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting and was named to the all-tournament team. He matched his point total from Saturday's 60-56 victory over Montclair State.
Senior Nyere Miller (Washington, DC) netted 12 points and freshman BJ Smith (Baltimore, MD) poured in nine for the Pride, who shot 43 percent (24-of-56) from the field.
Matt Sosna (Stratford, NJ) also was picked to the all-tournament team. The senior was buoyed by his 19-point effort Saturday.
Mike Wagner and Jim Schule scored 16 points apiece and Chase McGowan added 10 and eight rebounds for the Monarchs.
The Pride preseason ranked seventh by Small College Hoops, 23rd by D3Hoops.com and picked to win a third straight Commonwealth Conference title.
Widener on Tuesday visits Neumann for a 7:00 pm start in Aston, PA.
