Women's Soccer's 11th Shutout of the Season Helps it to 2-0 Win Over Lycoming; Pride Clinch Second Place

(boxscore)

Freshman Brittany Balentine (Medford, NJ) scored the only goal her team would need and junior Alee Gunter (Maple Shade, NJ) notched her latest shutout for Widener, which clinched second place in the Commonwealth Conference with a 2-0 blanking of Lycoming at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Balentine scored her seventh goal of the season in the 55th minute for Widener (11-4-2, 4-1-1 CC).  She got a pass from junior Sam Baer (Lancaster, PA) and floated it over goalkeeper Brie Pepe for a 1-0 lead.

For Baer, it was her 34th career assist to extend her own school record.

Widener made it 2-0 in the 83rd minute.  Junior Kim Sharpless (Millville, NJ) was taken down in the box and the Pride were awarded a penalty kick.  She buried it for her seventh goal of the year.

Gunter again got it done with four saves for her eighth shutout, giving Widener 11 this season and six in its last seven outings.  The 11 shutouts breaks the school record of 10 set in 1995 and 2007.

Balentine had four shots and Baer recorded three, giving Widener a 10-6 edge.

Pepe made four saves for the Lady Warriors (5-8-4, 2-3-1).

Widener will host third-seeded Elizabethtown in the conference semifinals on Wednesday at Quick Stadium.  The time is to be determined.
