Sophomore Megan Scarpinato (Sewell, NJ) and freshman Natalie Gifford (Morton, PA) each scored twice for Widener, which clinched a spot in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament with a 4-0 victory over Arcadia at Edith R. Dixon Field.
Scarpinato scored the first goal for the Pride (7-10, 2-2 CC) in the 23rd minute off a pass from junior Ellen Etzweiler (Landisville, PA). Gifford tallied in the 32nd minute thanks to a feed from junior Jessica Gonzalez (Eastampton, PA).
Widener made it 3-0 in the 49th minute as Scarpinato found the back of the net with her third goal of the season as freshman Kate Fetterman (Camden, ME) added the assist. Gifford netted her team-leading ninth goal of the year in the 56th minute and sophomore Shannon Fien (Millville, NJ) added the assist.
The Pride made it stand with a 26-5 shots edge that included 14-0 in the first half. Sophomore Megan Purcell (Perkasie, PA) made four saves for Widener and Brittany Rasmussen notched 13 for the Knights (5-14, 0-4).
Widener is in the conference tournament for the first time since 2004 and will face an opponent to be determined. The squad ends the regular season Saturday at home against second-ranked Messiah at 1:00 pm.
