Widener took advantage of a penalty kick and great defense in posting a huge 3-0 Commonwealth Conference victory at Lebanon Valley in Annville, PA.
The Pride (8-4-2, 2-1-1 CC) got a big break in the 16th minute when a shot was intentionally touched on a hand ball by the Dutchmen's Yvonne Mohr, earning an automatic red card. Freshman Brittany Balentine (Medford, NJ) had her penalty kick saved, but she booted the rebound past Alyson Reitmeyer for a 1-0 lead.
Going a player up the rest of the way, Widener took advantage. Sam Baer (Lancaster, PA) converted a 20-yard free kick in the 54th minute and fellow junior Kim Sharpless (Millville, NJ) scored in the 74th minute off a feed from sophomore Traci Farrell (Clayton, NJ).
Junior Alee Gunter (Maple Shade, NJ) helped it stay, making nine saves for her sixth shutout of the season. Balentine had five shots for the Pride, who notched a 17-11 shots edge and are 7-1-1 in their last nine matches.
Stacy Ganley made five saves with Kristen Mauser and Christine Fraser taking three shots apiece for Lebanon Valley (8-5-2, 2-2).
The victory was the 35th for third-year coach Brian Sheehan, making him the program's all-time winningest coach (35-18-4). He surpasses director of athletics Jack Shafer, who posted a 34-36-3 mark from 2000-03.
Widener is on the road Wednesday at Misericordia, beginning at 7:00 pm.
