Brittany Balentine's Goal Helps Women's Soccer to 1-0 Victory Over Albright

Freshman Brittany Balentine (Medford, NJ) scored in the 65th minute for Widener in a 1-0 Commonwealth Conference victory over Albright at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

 

Sophomore defender Jessie Furia (Morton, PA), the reigning league Goalkeeper/Defender of the Week, lofted a pass from the right side into the box.  Sophomore Caryinna Yenchak (Ashley, PA) got a touch on it to Balentine, who chipped it over goalkeeper for her fifth goal of the season.

 

Widener (7-4-2, 1-1-1 CC) owned a 14-4 shots edge in extending their unbeaten streak to three (2-0-1).  The squad is 6-1-1 in its last eight matches.

 

Junior Alee Gunter (Maple Shade, NJ) needed only one save for the Pride and Peltz totaled six for the Lady Lions (6-7, 0-3).

 

The victory was the 34th for third-year coach Brian Sheehan, moving him into a tie with director of athletics Jack Shafer for most in the program's history.  Sheehan is 34-17-4 with the Pride and Shafer guided the team from 2000-03.

 

Widener hits the road Saturday for another crucial league test, this time at Lebanon Valley in Annville, PA as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.  The women's match starts at 12:00 noon and the men's game commences at 3:00 pm.
